What goes up must come down... onto a giant turtle's head (Friday WTF)

As a lover of science, I have to tip my hat to Mr. Glenn Elert and his students at Midwood High School in Brooklyn, NY. After much careful research, Mr. Elert's physics class has published a fascinating new paper, entitled:

After testing seven different Mario games from 5 different game platforms, they were able to determine that the force of gravity in Mario's world is now barely half of what it used to be, but it is still roughly 5 times stronger than Earth's gravity.

In short, the Mushroom Kingdom must be a REALLY big place, but it was a lot bigger in 1985. That, presumably, is Bowser's fault.

To commemorate this groundbreaking discovery, I offer the following Friday WTF video:

Even when I was 10, that just made me feel sorry for Captain Lou.

PS - Mr. Elert's class have explored other interesting questions, such as:
  • How fast can a young Clark Kent run? (Answer: 296 mph)
  • How much force can an adult Clark Kent exert? (Answer: at least 3,766,000 N)
  • What is the compression strength of a human head in Sin City? (Answer: not strong enough)

Traffic of the Living Dead

Someone in Austin, TX hacked into highway signs and set them to warn motorists about a zombie attack.

As the Austin Public Works people dutifully pointed out, this is a crime. But, to quote Penny Arcade, it's an awesome crime.

Once upon a Midnight Dreary (Friday WTF)

This Friday WTF is a belated salute to the great Edgar Allan Poe, whose 200th birthday was last Monday.

Whoooooo Yeah (Friday WTF)

In a minor break with tradition, today's Friday WTF is not a video, but a website that is infinitely more entertaining than it should be. It's called the:

Now you too can make the unearthly Rock & Roll howlings of Diamond Dave in your very own home. The soundboard has some of Van Halen's most famous lyrics, including a couple in an actual human language.

Have fun, kids. If you want some pointers from the original:

EDITOR'S NOTE: if, like me, you found it hard to believe that soundbite at the very bottom really was in there, check around 1:42 on the video. Shows you what I know.

Rush for your dreams like a moth rushes fire (Friday WTF)

This Friday WTF includes an important lesson for all the kids out there: next time your mother tells you to eat all your spaghetti, listen to her.

(NOTE: the title of this post is a line from the ridiculous background music. The songwriter probably should have thought that one through a little better.)

I think I may have used this WTF video before, but maybe not. Even if I did, it's worth seeing twice:
